My 30 watt MCS 2000 model 1 produces 27 watts on 902 & RX sensitivity at 927 is well within factory spec. It's actually fun & rewarding to hack these rigs and make them perform great on the amateur bands, something that Motorola never intended for them to do. No, I don't work at a 2-way shop or for Motorola. IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN TOO!! I knew nothing about hex editing or CPS before I started playing with commercial gear. The programming software can be found on line for free with a little digging & the programming cables are dirt cheap on eBay.īatlabs has all the hex editing info you need to modify the CPS for direct entry of the amateur frequencies. Models with a "U" as the 4th character are 800 MHz units and WILL NOT work on 33cm amateur. If the 4th character is a "W", it'll work on 33cm regardless. Clueless sellers on eBay often site the model # in the listing, but you're only interested in the ID#. Tip: When looking for a 900 MHz radio, look for a "W" as the 4th character in the ID#. This is the radio that the county sheriff relied on out in the sticks. These radios are great performers on 33cm and can be found for cheap on eBay. The radio doesn't know what intermod is, quiet driving through the city even without an RX PL set.

The audio with the stock speaker is outstanding. The remote head will fit nicely in a DIN stereo hole in your car. I consider this model one of the last real p ublic service grade radios that big M made.

14 char alpha display, zones, multiple PL tones, and a radio that you know will last you decades. What you will end up with is a killer mobile VHF rig that puts out 60w on low power and 110 on high. The software can be found on the net or bought off ebay for about $30. If you don't have the parts laying around then that will be about $50 if you have the computer. If you want to program yourself you'll need to get the right equipment, not expensive if you hack at it, a 32bit win XT box with a real RS-232 port, a Motorola RIB (radio interface box) and the right cable for the MCS2000. Great for ham or SAR work since they are legal on narrowband FM. One of the best mobiles that Motorola put out in the 90s, you still see them in service today.
